Charm City May Be Slowly Losing Its Charm

For some people when they think of Baltimore they think of history, crabs, the inner harbor and more. But when others who aren’t familiar with the rich history and culture of the city all they see is an impoverished crime ridden city.

Baltimore had  309 known murders in 2018. The overall crime rate throughout the city is about 145% higher than the national average and about 23% of residents live below the poverty line.  And President Trump has not made anything better. He visited Baltimore in September 2019 and called it a, “ disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess”. He also stated that he couldn’t understand why anyone would ever want to live there and that it was the worst city in the United States.

Baltimores Rep. Elijah Cummings was put under fire by Trump after his visit. Cummings has been Baltimores rep for many years and not much has changed since he began his role. Elijah did not react to this well and went on twitter to respond saying, “Mr. President, I go home to my district daily, It is my constitutional duty to conduct oversight of the Executive Branch. But, it is my moral duty to fight for my constituents.”

Cummings wasn’t the only one who reacted to this comment the people of Baltimore was offended and shocked by the remark by Trump. The residents were offended and saw Trumps attack as an attack on all African Americans. Some  believe Trumps tweet stemmed from Baltimore being over 60% African American. They were also quick to say, why is a President that is so Pro-America saying these things about a city in a country he governs.

Even though Baltimore does have clear issues and the statistics are scary the residents are self aware. They notice the problems and struggles with poverty and violence and are always looking to improve. Some residents say its a beautiful city but it is extremely dangerous. The people of Baltimore are not happy with Cummings or Trump because for years and years nothing is changing and things only seem to be going down from here.

Trumps tweet and comments were inappropriate and uncalled for maybe this was the wake up call Baltimore needed. The Reps and the people need to step it up if they want to see change and Trump needs to be on board also. Everyone needs to open their eyes and support the rebuilding of Baltimore before it is too late.
