Tragedy in Laker Land

January 24 LeBron James passed Kobe Bryant for 3rd place on the all time scoring list when he scored his 33644th point of his career. This accomplishment now doesn’t seem that important does it. It seems like a crazy statement to say someone becoming the third leading scorer in NBA history is no big deal. But the tragedy that ensued makes you forget about it. Not just that. But about basketball in general.

When news broke Sunday afternoon of the icons passing lots of people were in disbelief. “It can’t be true. It’s Kobe Bryant”. But unfortunately as much as it didn’t seem like it throughout his life, Kobe was indeed human.

Arguments were made and calls came to cancel those games on Sunday afternoon. Players were on the sideline obviously emotional hearing of his passing. There were plenty of instances of teams trying to honor him on short notice. They took 24 second violations, 8 second violations, the timberwolves placed the ball at the free throw line where Kobe passed Michael Jordan on the all time scoring list. Players like Trae Young and Joel Embiid changes their number for a game. Even cancelling Tuesday night when the Lakers were supposed play the Clippers in the Staples Center.

This Tragedy was not only felt by the basketball world but all of sports and beyond. Kobe had a profound way to motivate people of all sports. Baker Mayfield had went out and tweeted “Kobe you were my idol… period. Mentality through and through. Thank you. To your family, I wish y’all nothing but the very best. Prayers and thoughts with you don’t begin to describe what we want for y’all. Love and respect to #8 and #24 forever. #MambaMentality #Mamba.”  Even our president Donald Trump took to twitter express his feelings on the tragedy saying “Kobe Bryant, despite being one of the truly great basketball players was just getting started in life. He loved his family so much, and had such a strong passion for the future. The loss of his beautiful daughter,Gianna, makes this moment even more devastating”.

Kobe impacted so many people no matter if you were a sports fan or not. He was truly a icon and role model for so many people around the world and he will be missed by many. Rest In Peace Kobe Bryant.
